On the Night of 15 March
Hui Te Rangiora Marae was deliberately set alight.
The Whare Tupuna, Te Waerea, was severely damaged—likely beyond repair. This wasn’t just an attack on a building. It was a blow to a community. A sacred space. A taonga.
A Legacy Worth Rebuilding
Hui Te Rangiora was the first marae established in Hamilton City since 1864.
Founded by the Catholic Māori Mission of St Joseph, it became a place where Māori Catholics—and all Māori—could feel at home. A place of belonging, faith, culture, and whānau.
It stood as a living expression of manaakitanga, wairua, and whakapono.
